OK. I take it back. I don’t want to be part of THAT reality show from ABS-CBN (Fine. I’ll call it PBB from hereon) even if they give out a few thousand pesos on audition day. Not on any show that uses songs you thought you knew right from the first note. Songs that the singers thought they could get away with by copying someone else’s work, but no. Thank God for New Wave.
I was told by my friend, Anton, to download this particular song. He told me to listen to it because his brother told him that it was somehow patterned to the song that PBB uses. I didn’t have the chance to do it right away, even if I was right in front of Dave’s PC. Maybe because I was too drunk to remember what the title or the singer was.
It took me a week to download it, thanks to Kitch’s spanking brand new laptop… and her dorm’s FREE wifi service. I hooked it up to Limewire and got in less than 2 minutes (No, I’m not bragging. Haha) What I heard was something that would make a musiclover flip on all fours… or a PINOY musiclover to commit suicide. If you want to hear it, I have readied a downloadable copy of the song. The bitrate’s lower, so if you want to get a copy of it, use your friendly download/theft client, key-in on the artist field: “The Care” and “Chandeliers” on the title field. Anyway, the file’s here.
Apparently, the group who did the song “Pinoy Ako”, Orange and Lemons, reportedly used the melody because “they we’re pressured” during that time and was listening to The Care’s album Diamonds & Emeralds… you do the math. They also thought that the UK 80’s band won’t mind, so they went on with their act of debauchery. I won’t talk much about what A LOT of people have already ranted on, so you can try this article from the Manila Bulletin.
I used to like OAL. I thought their music was refreshing, considering a lot of bands of who look and sound alike. I first saw them at Tower Records Makati during the launch of their latest album. I thought they were gonna hit it big in the industry. They do sound like British Pinoys with their accents. But I never thought their rip-off capabilities will go that far. I regret having an autographed OAL CD… and the poster that comes with it. Though I do feel good that I didn’t shake their hands or took a picture with them. I’m quite sad for Kitch, who told me that OAL was the first band she got an autograph from.
“Pinoy Ako… Pinoy tayo!” Yup, pinoy nga… These guys should find a way to redeem themselves. But I think their act would be far from forgiveable, let alone redeemable.
To Orange and Lemons, here’s to your career’s early demise.
